Why paint peels or flakes off (and how to avoid it)

The common reasons paint blisters, peels or flakes off, and how it's properly repaired so the problem doesn't come back.

Paint peeling off in chunks, blistering or flaking is about as frustrating as it gets, and there's almost always an explanation. I'm Pepe, a painter in Elche, and let me tell you why it happens and how to fix it properly, because just painting over it again is repeating the mistake.

The most common causes

90% of the time it's one of these (or several together):

  • Damp: if the wall has damp, the paint won't grip and it blisters or peels.
  • Poor preparation: painting over dust, grease or a wall that wasn't sanded or cleaned.
  • Painting over distemper or limewash: old 'powdery' paints won't hold the new coat.
  • No primer: on very absorbent or repainted walls, it won't grip without priming.
  • Old or poor-quality paint, or too many layers built up that peel away.

How it's properly fixed

For it not to happen again you have to tackle the cause, not paper over it:

  • Scrape and remove all the loose or blistered paint until the wall is sound.
  • If there's damp, treat it first (without this, any paint will peel again).
  • Sand, clean off the dust and repair what's missing (filler in the chips).
  • Prime with the right product and paint with the coats needed.

The DIY mistake

The classic move is slapping a fresh coat over the peeling paint, without scraping or priming. It lasts five minutes: the new coat comes away with the old. That's why a properly prepared job by a professional lasts years and the quick bodge doesn't. If you want to see what good preparation looks like, I go into it in the guide on price per m², which explains what a properly done job includes.

What I do for you

I prep the wall thoroughly, treat the damp if there is any, prime and paint so the result lasts; you'll find it in the flat painting service and, if there's loose textured plaster, in the wall skimming service. I'll come and take a look, tell you why it peeled and give you a fixed price for free.

FAQ

Can I paint over paint that's peeling?
No, it peels again straight away, dragging the new coat with it. You have to scrape off the loose bits, get the wall sound, treat any damp, prime and then paint.
It only peels in one spot, why?
It's almost always localised damp (a cold corner, a leak, a ground-floor wall) or an area that was prepped worse back in the day. You have to treat that specific cause; I'll tell you what it is when I look.
