The ceiling is the thing people think about least and the one that changes a room the most: a clean, white ceiling makes it look taller, brighter and newer. I'm Pepe, a painter in Elche, and here I'll explain how much it costs to paint one and why it has its knack.
Why the ceiling costs more than the wall
Painting a ceiling is more awkward and slower than a wall: you work with your arms up, it drips, you have to protect everything below and it nearly always needs two proper coats so it comes out even, with no shadows or heavier patches. That's why, for the same metres, a ceiling is charged a bit more than a wall.
Rough price
As a guide (rough prices per m² of ceiling, materials and labour included):
| Type of ceiling | Rough price (€/m²) |
|---|---|
| Smooth ceiling in good condition | from 6 €/m² |
| Kitchen or bathroom ceiling (washable/anti-mould) | 7 – 9 €/m² |
| Ceiling with woodchip to skim or stains to treat | bespoke |
Ceiling with woodchip or damp stains
Two very typical cases change the job (and the price):
- Woodchip on the ceiling: you can paint over it to freshen it up, or skim it smooth if you want it flat and modern (separate, just like on the walls).
- Yellow rings or damp stains: painting over them isn't enough, they come back. First you have to treat the damp and seal the stain, then paint.
How a ceiling comes out perfect
The secret to a ceiling coming out even, with no clouding or roller marks, is applying the coats in the right order and direction, with good side light so you can see the coverage as you go, and respecting the drying times between coats. I protect floors and furniture thoroughly because the ceiling drips more, and when I'm done I leave everything cleared away.

FAQ
- Do I need to paint the ceiling if I'm painting the walls?
- It's not compulsory, but it makes a huge difference: with freshly painted walls, a dull or yellowed ceiling really stands out. If the budget allows, painting it at the same time leaves the room like new for a little more.
- What colour do you paint a ceiling?
- Usually white or an off-white close to the walls; it widens the room and adds light. In rooms with low ceilings, matching the ceiling and wall shade makes the room feel taller.
- What do I do about damp stains on the ceiling?
- They have to be treated before painting, not just covered up. I seal the ring with a stain-blocking product and, if the damp is still active, I tell you where it's coming from so the source gets tackled. Painting over it untreated only delays the problem.
