Paint grips and lasts longer if it's applied at the right temperature and humidity. I'm Pepe, a painter in Elche, and I'll tell you when it's best to paint depending on whether it's interior or exterior, taking our coastal climate into account.
Interior: any time of year, with a few caveats
Inside the house you can paint all year round, because the temperature is stable. The only thing to watch is ventilation: in winter you still air it out, opening up for a while so the paint cures and the smell clears, even if it's cold. In summer, in real heat, it's best to paint first thing and not with the room at 35 degrees, because the paint dries too fast and it's harder to apply it thin.
Exterior: here the time of year matters a lot
The façade, the terraces and the metalwork are another story: they're out in the elements and the paint needs the right conditions to cure well. As a rule, the ideal is between 10 and 30 degrees with ambient humidity below 70%. In Elche that leaves spring and autumn as the best times.
- Avoid painting in direct summer sun: the paint dries before it spreads and you get marks.
- Avoid rainy or very humid days: the paint doesn't cure and can lift.
- Avoid painting metal or façade first thing with dew about: the moisture ruins the grip.
The coastal factor: sun and salt air
In the beach areas (Santa Pola, Arenales) the strong sun and salt air punish façades and railings far more. There, it's not just the time of year that matters but the product too: exterior paints resistant to UV rays and anti-rust enamels made for a marine setting. With the right materials and painting at a good time of year, the work lasts many more years. If there are stains or green mould, it's also worth treating the damp first.
My practical advice
If it's indoors, don't wait for a particular date: we sort it out whenever suits you. If it's the façade or exterior, plan it with a bit of margin for spring or autumn so we catch good weather. Give me some notice and we'll fit the work into the best possible window, no rushing.

FAQ
- Can you paint the façade in summer?
- You can, but carefully: working first and last thing and never with the wall in full sun, because the paint dries too fast and leaves marks. Spring and autumn usually give a better result.
- And what if it rains halfway through the façade job?
- I plan the work around the forecast and leave margins for drying. If rain comes in, I stop: painting an exterior in rain or high humidity spoils the grip and it's not worth taking that risk.
- Does painting indoors in winter cause problems?
- No, as long as you air it out. The indoor temperature is stable all year; you just have to open up for a while so it cures and the smell clears, in the cold months too.
