A stain on the ceiling that slowly spreads is worrying, and rightly so: it's almost always a sign of a damp problem that gets worse if you leave it. I'm Pepe, a painter in Elche on the Costa Blanca, and here I'll explain where it comes from and how to sort it properly, because painting over it is exactly what you shouldn't do.
The three types of damp (and how to tell them apart)
Not all stains are the same: knowing which one you're dealing with is what decides the fix.
| Type | Where it comes from | Typical sign |
|---|---|---|
| Leak | A drip, a pipe or the neighbour upstairs | A yellow ring that spreads, sometimes drips |
| Condensation | Moisture building up in cold, poorly ventilated spots | Black mould in corners and on the bathroom ceiling |
| Rising damp | Moisture coming up from the floor or wall | Stain and salt low down (more common in ground floors) |
Why painting over it doesn't work
A coat of paint over the stain covers it for a few days, but it comes back: ordinary paint doesn't seal off the damp or block the ring, so the yellow reappears and, if there's mould, it keeps growing underneath. It's throwing money away and, worse still, wasting time while the problem gets bigger.
How to get rid of it properly
The right order is always the same: sort the cause first, then the finish.
- Find the source and cut it off (the leak, the pipe, the ventilation).
- Let the area dry out properly and cut back anything that's blistered or loose.
- Seal the ring with a stain-blocking primer (otherwise the yellow bleeds through).
- Repaint with a breathable paint and, in damp areas, an anti-mould one.
When to call me in
If the stain is down to condensation or a one-off leak that's already been fixed, I'll leave it perfect: I cut back, seal and repaint so it doesn't come back. I treat surface damp and paint with the right product (you can check out my damp and anti-mould service). If the cause is a burst pipe or something structural that's beyond me, I'll tell you straight so you can tackle it at the root; what I won't do is charge you for a patch-up that won't last.

FAQ
- Can I just paint over the stain and be done with it?
- No, it'll come back. Ordinary paint doesn't block the ring or seal off the damp. You have to treat the source, seal it with a stain-blocking product and then paint; otherwise the yellow reappears within weeks.
- Is the ceiling stain coming from the neighbour upstairs?
- It could be: a leak from the flat above is one of the most common causes of a yellow ring that spreads. It's worth letting the neighbour or the building know so the source can be cut off before you repaint.
- Do you treat mould on the bathroom ceiling?
- Yes. Bathroom mould is nearly always condensation: I cut it back, apply an anti-mould treatment and paint with a specific product, and I'll give you a couple of ventilation tips so it doesn't come back.
