The hallway and entrance are usually the darkest spots in the house: narrow, with no windows and very little light. I'm Pepe, a painter in Elche, and with the right colour you can 'open them up' and add brightness without touching a single wall.
Light colours that bounce the light around
In an area with no natural light, the colour has to work in your favour: the lighter it is, the more it bounces around what little light there is. Off-white and very pale warm neutrals (a soft beige, a cream) work best; steer clear of dark or heavily saturated tones, which 'close in' the hallway and make it look even narrower.
Tricks to make it look wider
Beyond the colour, these tricks make a real difference:
- Ceiling in the same light shade as the walls (or lighter still): the hallway looks taller and more continuous.
- Doors and skirting in the same tone as the wall: no contrasts to 'chop up' the space.
- A satin finish with a touch of sheen: it reflects a bit more light than matt.
- A mirror and good warm lighting finish the effect off nicely.
A touch of colour, if you fancy it
If the hallway feels a bit bland all in pale tones, you can add colour to the end wall (the one at the far end of the hallway): it draws the eye and adds depth, and since it's just one wall it doesn't shrink the space. Painting a stripe or a door recess in a soft tone works too. Done carefully, a hint of colour livens things up without darkening them.

FAQ
- Can I paint a dark hallway grey or blue?
- In a hallway with no light, mid or dark tones tend to close it in. If you love them, it's better to save them for the end wall or a small detail, and keep the rest in a light shade that bounces the light around.
- Which paint holds up best in a hallway?
- A washable paint, because the hallway is a high-traffic zone (hands, suitcases, the shopping trolley). A satin or washable finish cleans up well and reflects a bit more light than matt.
