The kids' room needs to be cheerful but also somewhere they'll actually rest, and it has to put up with whatever they throw at it. I'm Pepe, a painter in Elche, and I'll tell you how to get the colour right and, above all, the type of paint.
Colour depending on what you're after
The idea is to balance energy and calm:
- Soft shades (aqua green, sky blue, beige, dusky pink): they relax and help them sleep.
- A lively touch (mustard, coral, green) on one wall or in the details: it adds a bit of fun without going overboard.
- For babies, stick to pastels and warm neutrals, which tire the eye less and grow with them.
- Avoid covering the wall in very intense colours: they're too stimulating come bedtime.
A wall for drawing on
A trick kids love (and one that saves your walls): give over a wall or a panel for them to 'paint' on themselves, using special chalkboard or magnetic paint. You concentrate the chaos in one spot and the rest of the room stays spotless. If you fancy it, tell me and we'll look into it.
The most important bit: washable, low-odour paint
In a kids' room the colour matters, but the paint matters more. I use washable paint, so marks from little hands, crayons and felt-tips wipe off without lifting the colour, and low-odour, so the room can be used soon and with peace of mind. I cover this in the guide on painting with the house lived-in and odour-free; for a baby's room I plan it with plenty of margin so it airs out well.

FAQ
- Which paint is best for a child's bedroom?
- A good-quality washable, low-odour paint: it stands up to marks and cleaning, and lets you use the room soon. For babies, I also plan it so it airs out well before use.
- Can I paint a wall for them to draw on?
- Yes, with chalkboard or magnetic paint on one wall or panel. It's the best way for them to let off steam without wrecking the rest of the room. Just tell me and I'll include it in the quote.
- Is it safe to paint with the child at home?
- With low-odour water-based paint and good ventilation, the disruption is minimal. Even so, I organise the room so it airs out well before they use it; we'll talk it through so you're comfortable.
